International Students Science Fair 2023

4 – 8 December 2023

ISSF 2023 poster and oral presentations

During ISSF 2023, students will share their research as both a poster presentation and an oral presentation.

Students are expected to deliver both a poster and oral presentation on a topic related to the theme of Sustainable Futures.

The fair has six sub-themes: Robotics and technology; Biology and molecular biosciences; Earth and environmental science; Physics and engineering; Computing and mathematics; Chemistry and nanoscience.

Each school may present up to three (3) research projects; that is, a minimum of one (1) research presentations delivered by 3 students, to a maximum of three (3) research presentations delivered by 3 individual students, or a similar combination.

English is the official language of ISSF 2023. All presentation materials, including abstracts, must be prepared in English and submitted on time.

Poster Exhibition

  • Posters should be A0 in size and in Arial font.
  • Schools are required to bring a hard copy of their posters to the event. A presentation table may be requested to display additional items and materials.
  • Presenters will have the opportunity to discuss their research posters to other participants and invited guests, including the judging panel.
  • Schools will be required to submit an online copy of their poster/s, prior to the fair.

Oral Presentation
Oral presentations must not exceed 10-minutes and will be followed by 5-minutes of ‘question and answer’ with researchers and experts. It is expected that all presenters are well-rehearsed, and presentations are interesting to the audience. Creativity and innovation-in-approach is encouraged.

A 300-word abstract will be called for prior to the event, to enable inclusion in the ISSF 2023 proceedings document. Schools will receive advanced warning. The abstract should be in Arial 11-point with 1.5 line spacing.

Schools will be required to submit files relating to presentations, including PowerPoints prior to the fair.

Educator presentations

ISSF provides a powerful platform for our visiting educators to share their educational and teaching expertise with each other through the teacher sharing forum.  This international sharing of practice not only deepens teacher efficacy, but mostly importantly, leads to direct gains in student learning and achievement.

Visiting teachers are invited to prepare a 5 to 7-minute presentation on a key pedagogical practice, teaching strategy or professional process that has led to increased student success.

Please note:

  • Prior to the fair, teachers will be required to submit a brief abstract of their presentation to be incorporated as part of the conference proceedings using Form 2: Oral, cultural and educator presentations. (Due by Wednesday 4 October.)
  • Teachers will be invited to email to ISSF2023@qasmt.eq.edu.au any resources to be used, including PowerPoint presentations and handouts.
  • Teachers will have access to a digital projector and computer on the day.

Cultural presentations

One of the highlights of ISSF is the Cultural Showcase evening. Schools are invited to share their cultural heritage through dress and performance.  This event builds greater cultural understanding and creates a deeper sense of community.

Please note:

  • Performing at this event is voluntary, however, all students are asked to come dressed in cultural attire on the evening.
  • Schools who wish to enter a performance should register using Form 2: Oral, cultural and educator presentations. (Due by Wednesday 4 October.)
  • Performances must not exceed 5-minutes in length.
